You've probably heard the term "slow fashion" — but what does it actually mean when a brand says they practise it?
For me, it's not a marketing label. It's the reason Green Witch Crafts exists.
Fast fashion produces over 92 million tonnes of textile waste every year. When I read that, I was gutted to think of all the beautiful fabric going to landfill — fabric with texture, history, and potential. What a waste!
What slow fashion means to me:
- Every piece is made by hand, one at a time
- I use recycled and repurposed materials, but occasionally buy new if it is heavily reduced (for example, I get most of my beautiful tissue paper from TK Max when they have a sale).
- When a fabric is gone, it's gone. Sometimes I will search for something similar on platforms such as Vinted, but most of my stock is discovered randomly. I love car boot sales and charity shops, as I never knows what I'm going to find. New yarns then often inspire new designs, which is why I'd never change the way I work.
- I make things that are timeless in regards to style. I am not fashion driven; I don't think bohemian and gothic styles will ever stop having an appeal! At the same time, I think it is wonderful how new generations interpret an aesthetic, and I try to incorporate new ideas into my work too. Again, I find this truly inspiring.
Our Gothic collection, Bohemian collection, and Viking collection are all built on this principle — each piece is a small act of resistance against throwaway culture. Green Witch Crafts is proud to provide people with an alternative option, for the alternative fashionistas out there.
